A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for eastern Garrett County through 4 p.m. Sunday, as snow and extreme cold continue to create hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington.

Forecasters say up to 2 inches of additional snow is possible this afternoon, with blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility at times. Temperatures remain in the single digits, while wind chills are expected to stay below zero, increasing the risk of frostbite and making conditions especially dangerous for motorists.

According to the National Weather Service, travel along major corridors including I-68, MD-495, and U.S. 219 could be impacted by slick pavement and brief periods of visibility dropping below one-quarter mile. Even light snow combined with strong winds can quickly reduce road traction, particularly on elevated and exposed stretches of highway.

The advisory affects communities across eastern Garrett County, where snow showers are expected to taper later this afternoon. However, officials warn that roads may remain icy even after snowfall ends due to persistent cold temperatures.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Emergency officials recommend checking road conditions before traveling by calling 511 and avoiding unnecessary trips if possible.

Pedestrians should also use caution, as sidewalks and parking lots may be icy and difficult to navigate.

While conditions are expected to gradually improve after the advisory expires, dangerous cold and icy patches may linger into the evening hours, keeping winter hazards in place.
