Oakland, MD –Residents in western Maryland and nearby West Virginia should prepare for a dangerous winter storm beginning Saturday afternoon, with heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions expected through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Saturday through 4 p.m. Sunday for Western Garrett County, Maryland, and Western Grant County, West Virginia.
Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of snow, with winds gusting up to 35 mph. Snow is forecast to begin between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, with the heaviest snowfall likely between 5 p.m. and midnight. During that time, snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour, significantly reducing visibility.
Blowing snow may reduce visibility to around one-quarter mile at times, creating near-whiteout conditions, especially in open and higher-elevation areas. Travel is expected to be very difficult, particularly Saturday evening and overnight.
Major roadways in the warning area include U.S. Route 219, Maryland Route 135, and mountain passes that are especially vulnerable to drifting snow and rapidly changing conditions.
Emergency officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must drive are advised to carry extra food, water, and a flashlight in case of becoming stranded. Motorists should check current road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
