Baltimore, Md. – Drivers across Maryland face near whiteout conditions before sunrise Monday as heavy snow and 40 mph wind gusts turn major highways slick just ahead of the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Monday for Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Cecil, St. Mary’s, Calvert, Frederick, Washington and parts of Montgomery and Harford counties, as well as eastern Loudoun County, Virginia. An additional 2 to 5 inches is expected in much of central and northern Maryland, with up to 2 inches in Frederick, Washington and eastern Loudoun counties. Visibility may drop below one-half mile in falling and blowing snow.

Interstates including I-95 near the Susquehanna River, I-83 north of Baltimore, and I-70 through Frederick are likely to remain snow-covered during the peak commute. Maryland State Highway Administration crews urge motorists to check 511 and delay non-essential travel.

Farther west, a separate warning continues until midnight for Garrett County, western Highland, and parts of Grant and Pendleton counties. Totals there will reach 6 to 12 inches, with gusts up to 50 mph creating whiteouts along I-68 west of LaVale and U.S. 48 near Moorefield.

Warnings remain in effect through late morning or midnight depending on location, and additional advisories could follow if bands persist.
