Baltimore, MD – A powerful winter storm sweeping through Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic is causing hazardous travel conditions Monday morning, with snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour in some areas. Major routes, including I-95, are already seeing reduced visibility and slick conditions. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel as the storm intensifies.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the region remains under a Winter Storm Warning through early Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches are expected in areas experiencing heavy snow bands. Ice accumulation is also possible, further increasing the risk for drivers. Officials recommend preparing emergency kits for vehicles and delaying travel until conditions improve.

Snowfall will continue into the afternoon, with the heaviest periods expected during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could create drifting snow, further reducing visibility. By Monday night, snowfall is likely to taper off but could still add 1 to 3 additional inches in some areas.

The extended forecast shows improving conditions by Tuesday, with sunny skies and highs near 34 degrees. Temperatures are expected to drop back to the low 20s Tuesday night. Wednesday will remain sunny with a high of 32, followed by a partly cloudy Thursday.

Local emergency services stress the importance of using extreme caution if travel is necessary. “Even treated roads will be slippery,” said officials in a public statement. Residents should also monitor updates from the NWS for real-time weather advisories and warnings.
