Maryland/D.C. – An elevated wildfire risk continues to threaten the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. areas due to strong winds and dry conditions through Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that wind gusts could reach up to 30 mph, significantly increasing the chance of wildfires along major roadways like I-95 and I-295. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and remain cautious with any activities that could ignite a fire.

According to the NWS Baltimore-Washington office, the region’s relative humidity will drop to between 25-40%, contributing to the rapid drying of vegetation. The fire risk is particularly high through Thursday afternoon, with gusty winds exacerbating already dry conditions. The wind speeds are expected to slow down by Friday evening, but dry weather will continue throughout the weekend, extending the fire threat.

In a detailed advisory, the NWS urged people to refrain from using open flames outdoors, especially near dry grasses and wooded areas. Additionally, those driving along major highways, such as I-95 and I-295, should be cautious of potential roadside fires and report any smoke to authorities immediately.

Extended Forecast:

• Friday: Sunny with a high near 69°F, north winds 14-17 mph in the morning, gusts up to 25 mph.
• Saturday: Mostly clear skies, high near 72°F, winds 9-18 mph.
• Sunday: Continued sunny conditions with a high near 63°F and lows around 42°F.

This dry spell is expected to persist until next Wednesday, making fire precautions critical across Maryland and nearby states.
