Oakland, MD – The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has extended a Winter Weather Advisory for the western Maryland and eastern West Virginia mountains through midnight tonight, warning of slick roads, gusty winds, and bursts of heavy snow.
The advisory includes Western Garrett County in Maryland, along with Western Grant and Western Pendleton counties in West Virginia. Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches of snow by Tuesday morning, with winds gusting up to 40 mph, making travel difficult and reducing visibility across mountain passes and ridgelines.
According to meteorologists, snow showers will continue intermittently throughout the day, intensifying into locally heavy bursts this afternoon and evening. The most hazardous travel is expected during that time, especially along U.S. Route 219, U.S. 33, and state Route 32.
Residents and travelers are urged to slow down, use caution, and watch for icy surfaces, particularly on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. The National Weather Service also warns that the morning and evening commutes could be impacted by slippery and snow-covered roads.
Snow showers are expected to gradually taper off early Tuesday, but temperatures will remain below freezing, allowing patchy ice to linger on untreated surfaces overnight.
