A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across portions of western Maryland and eastern West Virginia tonight as freezing rain and mixed precipitation create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, freezing rain and mixed precipitation will continue through late evening and overnight, producing additional ice accumulations ranging from a light glaze up to one-tenth of an inch. Even small amounts of ice are expected to make roads, bridges, and sidewalks very slippery, particularly on untreated surfaces.
In Maryland, advisory areas include Washington County, Central and Eastern Allegany County, Frederick County, Carroll County, Northern Baltimore County, Northwest Howard County, Cecil County, and Harford County. In West Virginia, Eastern and Western Mineral Counties remain under advisory coverage.
Advisory expiration times vary by location, with some areas ending at 11 p.m. Friday, others at midnight, and portions of northeastern Maryland continuing until 3 a.m. Saturday. The Ice Storm Warning for Extreme Western Allegany County has been cancelled, though a Winter Weather Advisory remains in place due to lingering freezing rain.
The National Weather Service warns that icy conditions may persist even after precipitation ends, especially overnight as temperatures remain near or below freezing.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways. Residents are encouraged to monitor local road conditions by dialing 511 and to prepare for the possibility of isolated power disruptions where ice accumulates.
