Oakland, Maryland – Travel across the higher elevations of western Maryland and eastern West Virginia is expected to deteriorate quickly tonight as snow and gusty winds move into the region, creating slippery roads and hazardous driving conditions through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning for western Garrett County in Maryland and western Grant and Pendleton counties in West Virginia. Snow accumulations of up to 3 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching as high as 45 mph.

In communities including Oakland, Deer Park, and nearby mountain roadways, snow-covered surfaces and blowing snow may reduce visibility overnight. Gusty winds could cause drifting snow on exposed roads and bring down tree branches, increasing the risk of blocked lanes and isolated power disruptions. The Thursday morning commute is expected to be the most impacted period.

Mountain passes, bridges, and untreated secondary roads are likely to become slick as temperatures remain cold enough for snow to accumulate. Even lighter snowfall could lead to hazardous conditions given the wind and elevation.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel overnight and early Thursday. Travelers should monitor road conditions by calling 511 before heading out. The advisory remains in effect through Thursday morning, and additional statements may be issued if snow or wind impacts increase overnight.
