Oakland, Md. – An early-season Frost Advisory and Freeze Watch are in effect for the higher elevations of western Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and western Virginia, as temperatures tumble toward the freezing mark late this week. Overnight lows could drop to 33°F by Thursday morning and dip to as low as 28°F by early Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington.

The Frost Advisory runs from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Thursday, covering Garrett and Allegany counties in Maryland, Highland County in Virginia, and Grant, Mineral, and Pendleton counties in West Virginia. The Freeze Watch then takes effect late Thursday night through Friday morning as colder, drier air settles into the mountain valleys.

According to the weather service, frost and freeze conditions may damage or kill sensitive plants and could also affect outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to cover or bring inside any tender vegetation, drain garden hoses, and wrap exposed pipes before the coldest hours of the night.

The chill will mark the coldest air mass of the fall so far for the Allegheny Highlands. Temperatures will moderate slightly this weekend, with highs climbing back into the upper 50s and 60s by Saturday afternoon under partly sunny skies.
