Baltimore, Maryland – As the winter solstice arrives this Sunday, colder overnight temperatures across Maryland are increasing the risk of frozen and burst pipes, putting homes in Baltimore at elevated risk for water damage as winter fully settles in. Longer nights and repeated freezes create ideal conditions for plumbing failures, especially in older homes.

According to the National Weather Service and the Maryland State Fire Marshal, pipes located in unheated basements, crawl spaces, attics, and along exterior walls are most vulnerable when temperatures remain below freezing for several hours. When frozen pipes begin to thaw, pressure buildup can cause cracks or bursts, releasing significant water into homes in a short period of time.

In Baltimore, officials urge residents to insulate exposed pipes, seal gaps around foundation vents and access doors, and keep indoor temperatures at or above 55 degrees, even when leaving home. Allowing faucets to drip slightly overnight can help prevent water from freezing inside pipes, while opening cabinet doors under sinks allows warm air to circulate.

Fire officials strongly warn against using blowtorches, kerosene heaters, or open flames to thaw frozen pipes due to serious fire risks. If reduced water flow or leaks are noticed, shutting off the home’s main water valve immediately can help limit damage.

Cold conditions are expected to persist into early next week, and additional winter safety advisories may be issued as temperatures fluctuate across the region.
