Maryland — Frost coats windshields across the Baltimore–Washington corridor this morning as temperatures hover near 20 degrees. Breath hangs in the air, and shaded pavement feels stiff underfoot as MLK Day gets underway.

Sunshine quickly takes over, helping conditions improve through the late morning. Even so, the cold lingers. Highs reach the lower 40s this afternoon, and gusty winds at times make it feel colder along I-95 and exposed bridges. Any moisture left from the weekend remains vulnerable to flash freezing early, especially in shaded neighborhoods and parking lots.

Clear skies tonight allow temperatures to tumble again. Lows fall into the mid-teens across suburbs from Annandale to northern Prince George’s County. Roads stay dry, but untreated surfaces could turn slick by early Tuesday morning. Drivers heading out before sunrise should slow down and watch ramps and overpasses.

Tuesday stays bright but cold. Afternoon highs struggle to reach the upper 20s, keeping winter firmly in place. By Tuesday night, calm winds and clear skies set up another cold drop, though conditions remain quiet.

The pattern shifts Wednesday. Milder air pushes in under sunny skies, lifting highs near 40 degrees. The change becomes more noticeable Thursday, when temperatures jump close to 50 degrees across much of central Maryland and the District. After several cold mornings, the warmer afternoons may melt lingering ice, increasing refreeze risk after sunset.

Looking ahead, the broader pattern suggests more active weather late in the week. A slight chance of snow returns Friday night into the weekend as colder air creeps back south.

Winter isn’t finished yet, but timing matters this week. Cold mornings give way to milder afternoons, creating changing road conditions. Stay alert during early drives and watch for refreezing after dark.
