Baltimore, Md. – Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms could snarl travel and threaten flash flooding across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon, with the highest risk east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and south of Interstate 70.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms is in place for Sunday, June 8, including damaging wind gusts and the possibility of an isolated tornado. A Flood Watch is active from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. for areas including Washington, D.C., northern Virginia, and parts of Maryland. Intense downpours could lead to rapid flooding of streams, urban roads, and low-lying areas.
In Virginia, cities like Alexandria, Fredericksburg, and Culpeper are under the storm threat zone. Maryland cities such as Waldorf, Annapolis, and Gaithersburg could also be hit by heavy rain and gusty winds. Motorists should avoid driving through flooded roadways and have alternate routes planned.
Residents are advised to monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts, charge electronic devices, and stay indoors during storms. The threat could impact evening commutes and outdoor events.
Additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms develop. Updates will continue throughout the day.
