Washington, D.C. – Summer-like heat is surging across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon, with temperatures climbing into the 80s and pushing close to record highs before a sharp cooldown arrives early this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, several locations are approaching or exceeding daily records. Dulles has already reached 84 degrees, surpassing its record of 83 set in 1968, while Martinsburg climbed to 88 degrees, beating its previous record of 84. Washington, D.C. is nearing its record of 90 degrees, with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s and still rising.
Cities including Baltimore, Hagerstown, and Charlottesville are also seeing unusually warm conditions for late March, fueled by dry air and steady southerly winds.
The warm spell will be short-lived. A cold front moving through will bring a noticeable drop of 20 to 30 degrees heading into Monday, returning temperatures closer to seasonal norms.
Residents should take advantage of the warm conditions today but be prepared for a quick shift back to cooler weather. Additional updates may follow as the cooldown moves into the region.
