Baltimore, MD – Drivers across Maryland are being urged to prepare today as forecasters warn that fast-moving snow squalls could develop this season, bringing sudden whiteouts and rapidly icing roads just as early holiday travel begins to increase. The system may affect travel from Baltimore to Frederick, Hagerstown, and along major routes including I-95 and I-70.

Snow squalls typically last fewer than 45 minutes but can cause immediate travel hazards. Strong winds and intense snowfall can reduce visibility to near zero, while flash freezing may turn pavement slick within minutes. Past events across the Mid-Atlantic have led to multi-vehicle crashes when drivers suddenly encountered whiteout conditions at highway speeds. Forecasters emphasize that avoiding the road during a Snow Squall Warning is the safest option. Meteorologists frequently caution: “You don’t want to be on the road when it happens.”

If you’re already driving when a squall hits, experts recommend slowing down gradually, activating hazard lights, and significantly increasing following distance. Drivers should stay in their lane, avoid slamming brakes, and never stop in an active travel lane where visibility may be extremely limited. Safe pull-off locations—parking lots, exits, or rest areas—are recommended until the burst passes.

Residents planning commutes, errands, or early holiday outings should keep winter emergency kits in their vehicles, including blankets, chargers, water, an ice scraper, and traction supplies like sand or cat litter. Homeowners should secure outdoor items in case brief wind gusts accompany the squalls.

Forecasters will continue to monitor conditions throughout the day, with further updates possible.
