BALTIMORE, MD – The calm start to December in Maryland may not last long. Light snow is expected to return by Friday morning, marking the first sign of winter for many across central Maryland and the I-95 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service, clouds will thicken late Thursday night as a weak disturbance approaches from the west. By daybreak Friday, snow showers may mix with rain across the Baltimore metro area and nearby counties, with a dusting to a half inch possible on colder surfaces before tapering by midday. While major accumulation isn’t expected, early commuters could see slick spots on bridges, ramps, and shaded roadways.

Temperatures will hover near 32°F to 34°F through the morning, meaning any snow that sticks may briefly melt before refreezing as winds calm Friday night. Drivers along I-695, I-70, and I-95 should allow extra time for travel and be alert for wet or refreezing pavement during the morning and evening transitions.

The weekend offers a quick recovery — Saturday and Sunday bring sunshine and highs in the low to mid-40s. However, the region remains in a colder-than-average pattern, and meteorologists note that early next week could feature another temperature drop as Arctic air slides south.

Looking further ahead, long-range models hint that Dec. 11–17 could bring increased winter activity across the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes — a reminder that the early December “winter tease” may soon turn into the real thing.
