Hagerstown, Maryland – Strong thunderstorms could rapidly intensify this evening across western Maryland, with damaging wind gusts and hail possible through 10 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 72 includes Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties, where atmospheric conditions support the development of severe storms through the evening hours.

Communities including Hagerstown, Cumberland, and Oakland are in the primary risk zone, where wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph and bring down tree limbs or cause isolated power outages. Brief hail is also possible in stronger storm cells moving along the Appalachian region.

Travel along I-68 and I-70 may be impacted by sudden heavy rain, reduced visibility, and debris on roadways, especially during the evening hours. Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Residents are urged to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive warnings. The watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., with additional warnings likely if storms strengthen.
