Baltimore, Maryland – Commuters across Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region could face thunderstorms during the Wednesday evening travel period as a strong cold front pushes into the Mid-Atlantic after an unusually warm afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, temperatures are expected to surge into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees Wednesday afternoon, creating the instability needed for thunderstorms to develop by the late afternoon and evening hours as the front approaches from the west.

The strongest storms could impact the Baltimore–Washington corridor, including Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Frederick and northern Virginia communities during the evening commute. Forecasters warn that some storms may become severe, producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain capable of briefly reducing visibility on major roadways.

Travel could be affected along Interstate 95, Interstate 70, Interstate 83 and the Capital Beltway, where sudden downpours and gusty winds may slow traffic.

Behind the front, a dramatic temperature drop will spread across the region late this week. High temperatures Thursday fall into the 50s, and overnight lows may dip into the 30s by late week, marking a sharp shift from the early-week warmth.

Residents should stay alert for possible watches or warnings Wednesday afternoon and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts as storms move across the Mid-Atlantic.
