Maryland – Flags crack sharply and loose debris skitters along sidewalks this morning as strong winds sweep across the Baltimore–Washington corridor. The air feels unsettled early, and travel conditions could worsen fast during a busy year-end commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Wind Advisory is in effect from mid-morning Monday through early Tuesday morning. West winds increase to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph across central Maryland, the District of Columbia, and nearby northern Virginia. Winds strengthen as clouds thin and colder air pours in.
Around Baltimore and Washington, light rain and low clouds early give way to breezy, drier conditions by late morning. Temperatures briefly rise into the mid-50s, then fall steadily this afternoon. Drivers on I-95, I-695, I-83, and the Capital Beltway should expect sudden crosswinds, especially on bridges and elevated roadways. High-profile vehicles may struggle to maintain control.
By evening, winds remain strong while temperatures dip toward freezing. Any lingering moisture could refreeze late, raising the risk for slick spots early Tuesday. Tree limbs may come down in stronger gusts, and isolated power outages remain possible.
Tuesday turns colder but brighter. Sunshine returns, though gusty winds linger, keeping wind chills biting during the morning commute. Midweek stays cold as New Year’s Eve approaches, with lows in the 20s and highs in the 30s. A few clouds increase Wednesday night, but major precipitation appears limited for now.
New Year’s Day 2026 looks mostly sunny but cold, with highs near the mid-30s and icy patches possible early. Winter conditions remain close enough to demand caution for holiday plans and travel.
