Salisbury, Maryland – Strong northwest winds followed by dangerous cold are set to create hazardous conditions across Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Virginia’s Eastern Shore this weekend, with impacts peaking from Saturday into early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a High Wind Watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday evening, with an Extreme Cold Watch following from Saturday evening through Sunday morning. Wind speeds could reach 30 to 40 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph, while wind chills may drop to around 10 below zero overnight.

Across Maryland, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, Inland Worcester, and the Maryland Beaches are expected to see the strongest winds. Trees and power lines could be brought down, leading to scattered power outages. Travel may become difficult on exposed roadways, particularly for trucks and other high-profile vehicles.

Conditions will deteriorate further Saturday night as colder air pours in. Prolonged exposure to the bitter wind chills could result in hypothermia without proper protection. Residents along the coast and inland areas alike are urged to secure loose outdoor items, limit time outside, and keep pets indoors.

Virginia’s Eastern Shore, including Accomack and Northampton counties, faces similar risks. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the system approaches, with the cold lingering through Sunday morning.
