Baltimore, Maryland – Dangerous heat and scattered thunderstorms are hitting central Maryland and northern Virginia Sunday afternoon, as a cold front prepares to sweep through the region by tonight, bringing relief from the oppressive humidity.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, heat indices are ranging from 95 to 105°F, with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s east of the Blue Ridge. Temperatures are slightly cooler in the mountains, with highs near 77–82°F in the Alleghenies. Thunderstorms with brief heavy rain and gusty winds are possible from Washington, D.C., through Shenandoah Valley into the evening.

Storms may cause localized flooding on urban roadways, particularly during peak travel hours. Drivers should avoid underpasses and low-lying routes during heavy downpours. A few showers may linger into Monday morning in western regions like the Allegheny Mountains and Shenandoah Valley, but most areas will see drier, cooler air take over by Tuesday.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors through tonight. Relief from humidity is expected Monday afternoon, with more seasonable temperatures lasting into midweek.
