Maryland Weather Alert: Frost Quakes May Rattle Homes from Baltimore to Frederick

Baltimore, MD – From Baltimore to Frederick, Marylanders could soon hear startling booms echoing through the night as bitter cold sweeps across the state. According to the Maryland Geological Survey, these mysterious winter noises are likely frost quakes — sudden cracking events in the frozen ground caused by rapid temperature drops.

Also known as cryoseisms, frost quakes form when rain or melted snow soaks into the soil, then freezes too quickly. As that trapped water expands into ice, it builds pressure until the ground splits apart, releasing energy in a quick, thunder-like burst that can rattle windows or even shake homes.

Meteorologists say conditions are perfect for frost quakes this week across central and western Maryland, as temperatures are expected to plunge from the upper 30s to below freezing in just hours. With little snow cover to insulate the soil, the rapid freeze could trigger ground cracking overnight — especially in areas around Baltimore, Frederick, and Hagerstown.

Frost quakes typically strike between midnight and dawn, when temperatures are coldest. Though not dangerous, they can leave small cracks in driveways or create frost heaves in yards.

Experts recommend ensuring good drainage and directing downspouts away from foundations before deep freezes.

So if you’re awakened by a thunderous boom on a calm, icy night from Baltimore to Frederick, it’s likely not construction or fireworks — it’s Maryland’s frozen ground snapping under the winter chill.
