Washington, D.C. – Drivers and residents across the D.C. metro region should prepare for one more round of dangerous storms and possible flash flooding Friday afternoon and evening as a Flood Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Watch remain active through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorms may produce damaging wind gusts, large hail, and torrential rainfall Friday, especially in the Washington and Baltimore metro areas, as well as across northern Virginia. Flash flooding is most likely along and east of I-95. Scattered rainfall totals could exceed one inch in a short time, especially in low-lying and urban zones.

Localized flooding could close roadways including segments of I-66, I-495, and U.S. Route 50. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid travel during active storms and to move electronics and valuables off basement floors.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until 12 a.m. Saturday. Heat and humidity will return behind the storms, with a high of 92°F on Saturday and another round of possible storms late Sunday.

Next week brings daily storm chances and continued warmth. Monday and Tuesday both feature highs near 91°F and repeated afternoon thunderstorm risks.

Residents should charge devices, stay weather-aware, and avoid flooded roadways. More advisories may follow.
