Maryland – Damp pavement and cold air set the tone this morning as a wintry mix begins spreading across central Maryland and the Washington metro. What starts quietly today may turn slick fast, especially for drivers heading out later in the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midday through late tonight for central and northern Maryland, including Baltimore, as well as Washington, D.C. Mixed precipitation is expected, with sleet and freezing rain producing ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch. Areas closer to the Pennsylvania border could see slightly higher totals.
Across Baltimore and the District, temperatures hover near the mid-30s. Precipitation may begin as sleet or freezing rain before gradually changing to rain later this evening as slightly warmer air moves in from the south. Even brief icing can make roads hazardous, especially bridges and overpasses along I-95, I-695, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and Route 50.
Conditions may deteriorate by late afternoon and through the evening commute. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden lane changes. Side streets and untreated sidewalks may become slick quickly, increasing fall risks.
Saturday offers some improvement, with clouds lingering and highs reaching the lower 40s. Still, any leftover moisture could refreeze after dark. Attention then turns to Sunday and Monday, when periods of rain return ahead of another cold push.
As New Year’s week 2026 approaches, temperatures trend colder again. While widespread snow is not guaranteed, repeated freeze-thaw cycles could keep black ice a concern during early morning travel.
Residents are urged to stay alert for updates and check local road conditions before heading out. Traveling later today or tonight? What are conditions like where you are seeing them firsthand?
