Cumberland, MD – Snow and wind are combining to make travel nearly impossible across western Maryland and nearby mountain communities, with up to 7 inches of additional accumulation and wind gusts reaching 50 mph through midnight Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight for Western and Eastern Garrett counties in Maryland, Western Highland County in Virginia, and Western Grant and Western Pendleton counties in West Virginia. Snowfall totals of 3 to 7 inches are expected, with the highest amounts along west-facing slopes above 3,000 feet. Northwest winds will gust between 35 and 50 mph, strongest this morning and again late this afternoon into the evening.

Along I-68 and US-40 west of LaVale, blowing snow could drop visibility below a quarter mile. Similar conditions are expected on US-48 west of Moorefield, US-33 and WV-28 near Franklin, and US-250 west of Monterey. Downed tree limbs and isolated power outages are possible as heavy snow loads combine with strong wind.

In Cecil County, a separate Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Monday, where up to 2 additional inches and 40 mph gusts may slow the morning commute around Elkton and along I-95.

Officials urge drivers to delay non-essential travel and check 511 for updated road conditions. Warnings remain in effect through 10 a.m. in Cecil County and until midnight in the higher elevations, with additional advisories possible if snow bands persist.
