Central Appalachians – Snow squalls and strong winds are expected to create near blizzard conditions late tonight into early Saturday across parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday for Extreme Western Allegany County in Maryland, Western Highland County in Virginia, and Western Mineral County in West Virginia.

Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, but conditions may become especially dangerous due to wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph. The strong winds are expected to cause blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility and making travel hazardous, particularly in open and higher-elevation areas.

Periods of heavy snow and snow squalls are possible from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning as a strong Arctic front moves through the region. Officials warn that the combination of heavy falling snow and blowing snow could lead to very low visibility, at times approaching near blizzard conditions.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous. The deteriorating conditions could impact the Friday evening commute, with rapidly changing visibility and road conditions making travel dangerous.

Strong winds may also cause tree damage, with the potential for downed limbs creating additional hazards on roadways.

Residents are urged to delay travel if possible. Those who must be on the roads should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for sudden whiteout conditions. Drivers are encouraged to monitor road conditions by calling 511 in their respective states.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve after daybreak Saturday as winds ease and snow showers taper off.
