WASHINGTON D.C. REGION — A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect now through early afternoon across much of Maryland, Virginia, and eastern West Virginia, as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain continues to impact the region’s Tuesday commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, multiple advisory zones stretch from the Potomac Highlands and Shenandoah Valley eastward through Frederick, Carroll, and northern Montgomery counties in Maryland, and south through Culpeper, Fauquier, and Albemarle counties in Virginia. The warnings extend through 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST, depending on location.

Meteorologists report additional snow accumulations of up to one inch, with ice glazing up to one-tenth of an inch in some valleys and higher elevations. The mixture is causing slick bridges, ramps, and untreated secondary roads, especially across Interstate 70, I-81, and I-66 corridors.

“Travel could be very difficult this morning,” forecasters cautioned. “Use extreme care and allow extra time for commutes.” Crews are responding to multiple reports of spinouts and icy intersections, with freezing drizzle continuing in some areas even as temperatures hover near 32°F.

By midday, precipitation is expected to change to plain rain as slightly warmer air moves in from the southeast. Still, upslope snow showers could persist into the afternoon west of the Allegheny Front, adding a fresh coating in Garrett, Grant, and Mineral counties.
