Baltimore, Maryland – Another punishing heat wave is gripping Maryland, with dangerous humidity and a string of severe weather threats stretching through Friday. Residents from the Appalachians to the Chesapeake Bay are under Heat Advisories today as temperatures surge into the upper 90s and heat indices climb as high as 109.
According to the National Weather Service, the highest risk of heat extends across central and eastern Maryland, including Baltimore, Frederick, and Annapolis, as well as the Blue Ridge foothills. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, lightning, and localized flooding, especially in the mountains and Shenandoah Valley. Highs today will range from 93–98°F (mountains: 80–93°F), with oppressive humidity making conditions more hazardous for outdoor workers, the elderly, and anyone without reliable cooling.
Thursday brings slightly lower temperatures but an increased chance of numerous showers and strong thunderstorms, with flash flooding possible on major routes like I-70 and I-95. Friday marks a dramatic change as a cold front sweeps through, dropping highs to the low 70s and ending the oppressive stretch, though lingering storms may persist in places like Hagerstown and Gaithersburg.
Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and monitor local alerts for any new advisories or flash flood warnings. Relief arrives by Friday, but Maryland remains under active advisories until then.
