Maryland – Flags snap in stiff northwest winds, the air feels razor sharp, and exposed skin burns quickly across the Baltimore–Washington corridor this morning. Even in full sun, the cold refuses to ease, making short trips outside uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through early afternoon, with wind chills dropping as low as 10 degrees below zero in parts of central Maryland, northern Virginia, and the District. Officials warn frostbite and hypothermia can develop quickly without proper protection.
Temperatures across the region hover in the teens early, including near Baltimore and along the I-95 corridor. Gusts over 20 mph keep wind chills brutal through midday. Side streets may look dry, but refreezing moisture creates slick patches on bridges, ramps, and shaded roadways. Drivers should slow down, especially during early travel.
Conditions improve slightly Monday. Sunshine dominates, and highs climb into the low 30s, though wind chills stay near zero during the morning commute. Monday night turns colder again, with lows dipping into the teens.
Attention then shifts to midweek. Clouds increase Tuesday as a new system approaches. Light snow becomes possible Tuesday night into Wednesday, with temperatures near freezing. Even minor accumulation could snarl travel during peak hours if snow develops quickly or refreezes after sunset.
Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook keeps the Mid-Atlantic colder than normal into the first full week of February. While parts of the southern U.S. warm dramatically, winter holds firm here. Meteorologists continue monitoring additional disturbances that could bring more wintry weather beyond midweek.
Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and check on neighbors who may need help staying warm. Commuting today or midweek? Share what road conditions look like where you are.
