Virginia wakes up to a glaze of ice clinging to railings and tree limbs, with light freezing rain still falling across Annandale. Pavement shines under gray skies, and bridges along I-495 and I-395 remain slick as temperatures hover near 34 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. for portions of northern Virginia, central Maryland, and the D.C. metro. Additional ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are possible, mainly on bridges and elevated surfaces. Light snow and sleet mixed in earlier, but freezing rain has been the primary concern.
Drivers along I-95, Route 50, and the Beltway should slow down and leave extra space. Even minor icing can trigger spinouts. Conditions may improve late this morning as temperatures climb toward 46 degrees and precipitation changes to plain rain.
Rain continues into the afternoon with highs in the mid-40s. By Wednesday, temperatures rebound sharply to near 60 degrees with patchy fog and lingering showers. That rapid thaw could create standing water, then refreeze in colder pockets after dark in outlying areas.
Thursday turns milder, reaching 71 degrees with only a slight shower chance. Friday surges to 75 degrees under mostly sunny skies. A true warm spell takes hold heading into the first full week of March.
We spring clocks ahead at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 8. Longer daylight and above-normal temperatures dominate the 6- to 10-day outlook.
For now, treat untreated roads with caution. Are you seeing ice linger in your neighborhood this morning?
