Baltimore, Maryland – Light snow is expected across much of Maryland and Virginia tonight, potentially creating slippery road conditions into the Wednesday morning commute, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office reports that light snow will develop between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday and continue overnight, tapering off by early Wednesday morning. Snow accumulations of a coating to 1 inch are expected across most locations, with isolated higher amounts possible in elevated terrain.
The Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas, including the District of Columbia, central and southern Maryland, and northern Virginia, are expected to see light snow between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Areas affected include Baltimore, Annapolis, Bowie, Greenbelt, Silver Spring, Rockville, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Manassas, Woodbridge, and Fredericksburg.
Across the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia Piedmont, and Blue Ridge Mountains, snow may begin earlier, around 5 p.m., with accumulations up to 1 inch. Locations above 1,500 feet could see locally higher totals of 1 to 2 inches, particularly in portions of the Blue Ridge and adjacent high terrain.
The National Weather Service Blacksburg notes that western Virginia and nearby West Virginia ridgelines may receive up to 2 inches of snow, while valley locations may remain closer to a half inch. Warmer valley temperatures may keep some treated roads wet, though slick spots remain possible.
Forecasters warn that even light snowfall may create hazardous travel conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution during overnight travel and the early morning commute.
