Maryland – Pale winter sun fades quickly as colder air tightens its grip across the Mid-Atlantic. Pavement looks dry now, but that won’t last. A large winter storm is lining up to spread snow and ice across Maryland, northern Virginia, and the Washington region this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning. Widespread snow is expected to develop Saturday night, with a high likelihood of at least five inches in some areas. Locations south of Highway 50 and near I-95 face added risk of sleet and freezing rain mixing in.
In Annandale and surrounding Fairfax County communities, snow may begin Saturday evening, turning heavier late at night. Rates could reach one inch per hour at times, quickly covering roads. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile during heavier bursts, especially near major routes like I-495 and I-95.
Sunday brings continued winter weather. Snow and sleet are expected during the day, with freezing rain possible at night as temperatures stay well below freezing. Travel could become very difficult. Officials warn that hazardous conditions may linger into the Monday morning commute.
Cold air already in place will deepen behind the storm. Wind chills are expected to fall into the teens, possibly lower, increasing the risk of flash freezing wherever snow partially melts. Side streets, bridges, and parking lots could turn icy with little warning.
Residents are urged to prepare now. Finish errands early, charge devices, and plan to avoid unnecessary travel. Keep blankets, food, and water ready in case of power disruptions.
Looking ahead, bitter cold remains locked in early next week. Additional storm chances may follow as colder-than-normal air holds across the East.
