Washington, DC – Temperatures could drop as low as 25°F late Tuesday night, putting early spring crops, backyard gardens, and exposed plumbing at risk across the Mid-Atlantic by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning for a large portion of Maryland, northern Virginia, and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Forecasters say clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall quickly overnight, with the coldest readings expected just before sunrise.
The freeze threat spans the I-95 corridor, including Washington, Baltimore suburbs, and Northern Virginia communities such as Fairfax, Manassas, and Fredericksburg. Colder inland areas like Winchester, Culpeper, and Hagerstown could see temperatures closer to 25°F, increasing the risk of widespread frost and plant damage.
Residents should cover sensitive vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and protect outdoor plumbing ahead of the overnight cold. Commuters early Wednesday may also encounter isolated frost on bridges and overpasses.
Temperatures will rebound after mid-morning Wednesday, but additional cold alerts remain possible if clear, calm conditions persist later this week.
