Baltimore, MD – A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of central and southern Maryland, as well as northern Virginia, with damaging winds expected until 1:30 PM EST Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, storms were detected around 1:05 PM moving east at 45 mph. The impacted areas in Maryland include Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties. In Virginia, southeastern Fairfax County is affected.
Radar indicates wind gusts up to 60 mph, which may cause trees and large branches to fall, leading to possible injuries, property damage, and road blockages. Power outages are also expected in some areas.
Residents in the path of these storms should seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. The NWS warns that tornadoes can develop quickly from these severe storms, advising residents to be alert for sudden changes.
Additional warnings have been issued for central and eastern Virginia, including King and Queen, Richmond, New Kent, Caroline, Westmoreland, King William, Hanover, and Essex counties. These storms are moving northeast at 50 mph, bringing similar threats of damaging winds and power disruptions.
Officials urge the public to report severe weather conditions and stay updated on forecasts. Residents should secure loose outdoor objects and avoid travel during the storm.
