Annapolis, MD – A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday for several counties in Maryland and Virginia, as storms bring the potential for damaging winds and hail.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the watch covers parts of central and southern Maryland, including Anne Arundel, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties. Cities such as Annapolis, Glen Burnie, and Lexington Park are included in the alert. Additionally, the advisory extends to several southeastern Maryland counties, including Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester.

In Virginia, 25 counties remain under the watch, including areas in central, east-central, and southeastern parts of the state. Cities like Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, and Colonial Heights could see severe weather impacts. The watch also includes portions of the Chesapeake Bay and adjacent coastal waters, affecting marine activities.

The NWS warns of potential wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, which may lead to power outages and downed trees. Hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible. Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts and seek shelter if conditions worsen.

Travelers should exercise caution on the roads, as heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding. Boaters and those in coastal areas should remain vigilant as storm conditions could create hazardous waters.

The watch is expected to expire by 6 p.m., but officials advise staying updated as conditions could change rapidly.
