RICHMOND, Va. – Parts of Virginia and the Carolinas face multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms through Friday, with some storms producing heavy rain capable of flooding low-lying roads and neighborhoods. Afternoon and evening storms could be slow-moving, increasing the risk for localized flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the heaviest rainfall is expected Thursday and Friday, especially along and south of Interstate 64 in southeast Virginia. In northeast North Carolina, storms may bring gusty winds alongside downpours, while eastern shore communities in Maryland could also see scattered storms and brief flooding.

Drivers should watch for water pooling on major routes, including U.S. 58, U.S. 460, and portions of I-95 and I-64. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through flooded intersections and to secure outdoor items ahead of strong wind gusts.

Storm chances lessen by the weekend, but another hazard is brewing for the coast — long-period swells from distant Tropical System Erin could create dangerous rip currents starting late Sunday night.
