Virginia Beach, VA – Rough surf and powerful rip currents are set to make swimming hazardous across North Carolina and Virginia beaches on Saturday, with waves up to 7 feet threatening even experienced swimmers and surfers.

According to the National Weather Service, Beach Hazards Statements are in effect from 6 a.m. through Saturday evening for the entire Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island, Core Banks, Virginia Beach, and coastal counties stretching from Maryland to North Carolina. Forecasters warn of strong longshore currents and large breaking waves, with the most dangerous conditions expected a few hours around Saturday’s low tide at 8 a.m.

Coastal Pender and New Hanover counties in North Carolina will see strong north-to-south currents capable of sweeping swimmers off their feet and into deeper water. In the Northern Outer Banks and Hatteras Island, dangerous shore breaks could cause neck and back injuries, while rip currents are likely to pull even the strongest swimmers far from shore. Ocracoke Island and Core Banks are under similar threats, with local lifeguards urging everyone to check with beach patrol before entering the surf.

Travelers and locals in Virginia Beach, Accomack, and Northampton counties are also under warnings for rough surf and hazardous swimming. Large breaking waves—4 to 7 feet—will create a high risk of rip currents along the Maryland Beaches and into eastern Currituck County, North Carolina. Officials advise staying out of the water and avoiding piers and jetties.

Beachgoers should remain out of the surf, follow instructions from lifeguards, and never swim alone. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore and wave for help if unable to escape. Keep devices charged in case of emergencies and monitor local alerts throughout the day.

Hazardous swimming conditions will persist until Saturday evening, with additional advisories possible if rough surf continues into Sunday. Check for local updates before heading to the beach.
