Annapolis, MD – The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has issued a Gale Warning for the Chesapeake Bay and lower Potomac River early Monday, followed by a Small Craft Advisory through midweek as strong north winds continue to churn up hazardous waves.

According to the weather service, north winds of 20 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 35 knots, will continue until 8 a.m. Monday, October 13, producing waves of 2 to 5 feet across the Chesapeake Bay from Sandy Point, Maryland, to Smith Point, Virginia. After 8 a.m., conditions will gradually ease but remain dangerous, with 15 to 25-knot winds and choppy waters expected through 6 a.m. Wednesday, October 15.

Forecasters caution that these conditions could capsize small vessels or damage poorly secured boats, particularly in open waters and around the Tangier Sound and Bloodsworth Island areas.

Mariners are advised to remain in port, seek safe harbor, and delay travel plans until calmer conditions return midweek.
