Baltimore, MD – A chilly start to October is bringing frost concerns to parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia tonight into Thursday morning, with temperatures forecast to dip near the freezing mark.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore/Washington office, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday for sheltered valley locations west of US-220 and along the Allegheny Front. Residents in these areas could see overnight lows between 32 and 38 degrees, creating conditions favorable for frost formation.

The NWS warns that frost may cause damage to sensitive outdoor plants and vegetation. Gardeners and homeowners are advised to bring potted plants indoors or cover exposed plants with light cloth, burlap, or plastic sheeting if moving them isn’t possible.

Forecast maps show temperatures in the mid-30s across much of western Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and portions of Virginia, while areas closer to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are expected to remain in the mid-40s to low 50s.

While the frost risk is limited to higher elevations and valley locations, this marks one of the earliest frost advisories of the fall season, signaling a shift toward colder mornings in the Mid-Atlantic.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and take protective steps to minimize damage to plants and gardens.
