Washington, D.C. – Scorching temperatures and severe storms are set to strike Maryland and the D.C. region Thursday, putting drivers and residents on alert. Heat index values could soar to 107°F, while strong storms may roll in during the afternoon, bringing damaging winds and hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday across D.C., northern Virginia, and most of Maryland. Afternoon highs will hover near 96°F, with humidity pushing “feels like” temps well past 100°F. Scattered thunderstorms may begin developing after 2 p.m. Thursday, especially along the I-95 corridor.

Motorists should avoid non-essential travel during peak heat hours, particularly on routes like I-270, I-495, and U.S. 50, where sudden downpours could reduce visibility. If outside, drink fluids, seek shade, and wear light clothing. Cooling centers may be available in Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Anne Arundel counties.

Thursday evening may bring more widespread storms, with potential for brief flooding and gusts over 40 mph. Spotter activation is not expected, but residents are urged to monitor alerts throughout the day.
