Baltimore, Md. – Dangerous heat and severe storms could impact much of Maryland, northern Virginia, and eastern West Virginia later today, with the greatest threat coming this afternoon into tonight. Damaging winds, torrential rainfall, and isolated hail are possible as a strong cold front sweeps into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, areas along and north of I-66 to the Pennsylvania border face a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms. Early showers in far western Maryland and the northern Appalachians of West Virginia are expected to fade before sunrise, but a second round of storms is likely to develop by late afternoon.

High humidity will push heat index values into the upper 90s to near 100 in many locations, especially across urban corridors. Heavy rain may cause localized flash flooding, and strong wind gusts could down trees and power lines. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways and keep phones charged in case of outages.

The storm threat should gradually ease after midnight, but additional showers and isolated thunderstorms remain possible through Friday, particularly west of the Blue Ridge.
