Gaithersburg, MD – A fast-moving and destructive thunderstorm is bearing down on Montgomery County this evening, prompting urgent warnings from the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia, the severe thunderstorm was located near Boyds around 5:18 p.m. Friday and is moving east at 40 mph. A warning has been issued for central Montgomery County, including Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Germantown, through 5:45 p.m.
The storm is packing wind gusts up to 80 mph and quarter-sized hail, with the potential to cause significant damage. Radar indicates the storm may bring down trees and power lines and damage roofs, sheds, and mobile homes. Outdoor conditions are considered life-threatening in some areas.
Communities potentially impacted include Clarksburg, Olney, Darnestown, Aspen Hill, Wheaton-Glenmont, and Montgomery Village. Emergency officials advise residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of their home or building and remain indoors until the storm passes.
Local law enforcement and emergency management teams are standing by for reports of damage. Residents witnessing dangerous conditions or storm impacts are urged to report them to authorities, who will relay the information to the National Weather Service.
