Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – A powerful winter storm is expected to impact much of Maryland and Pennsylvania beginning Sunday night, bringing heavy snow, dangerous cold, and periods of ice that could significantly disrupt travel, utilities, and daily routines across the region through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will overspread both states late Sunday, becoming heavy at times through Monday. Arctic air moving in behind the storm is expected to drive temperatures well below normal, creating hazardous wind chills and increasing the risk of frostbite during overnight hours and early morning commutes.

The most severe travel impacts are expected along major corridors including Interstate 83, Interstate 81, Interstate 76, Interstate 70, and Interstate 95. Central and northern Pennsylvania face the highest potential for accumulating snow, while western and northern Maryland could also see significant snowfall. Southern Maryland and parts of southeastern Pennsylvania may experience periods of sleet or freezing rain, increasing the risk of icy bridges, downed tree limbs, and scattered power outages.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel during periods of heavy snow, prepare vehicles with winter emergency supplies, and ensure homes are ready for prolonged cold. Extreme temperatures could strain heating systems and increase the risk of frozen pipes.

Winter storm warnings and cold weather advisories are expected to remain in effect through Tuesday, with additional alerts possible as conditions continue to evolve across Maryland and Pennsylvania.
