Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – Drivers across central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland could face dangerous evening travel Monday as a fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms pushes east with the potential for tornado warnings and damaging wind gusts.

According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, portions of central and eastern Pennsylvania along with much of Maryland fall within a Level 3 “Enhanced Risk” for severe storms Monday. The main threat is widespread damaging wind gusts capable of reaching 60 to 70 mph, strong enough to snap tree limbs and knock out power. Several tornadoes may also develop as storms organize into a rapidly moving squall line.

The greatest impacts are expected from late afternoon through late evening as storms move from central Pennsylvania toward the Susquehanna Valley and northern Maryland. Cities including Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, Baltimore, and Hagerstown could see intense bursts of wind and heavy rain capable of disrupting travel along Interstates 81, 83, 76, and 95.

Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and enable wireless emergency alerts before storms arrive. Brief tornado spin-ups embedded within the storm line may develop quickly, leaving little warning time for communities across the region.

Additional severe thunderstorm or tornado watches may be issued Monday as the storm system strengthens. The severe weather threat will continue shifting toward New Jersey and the Northeast later Monday night.
