LA PLATA, Md. – As holiday deliveries ramp up following the Black Friday rush, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to stay alert and protect their packages from theft.

Deputies say this time of year often brings a spike in “porch pirate” thefts as online orders stack up across neighborhoods. The department shared several practical steps to help residents keep deliveries secure:

🎁 Track shipments and plan to be home when packages arrive.
🎁 Ask a trusted neighbor to pick up deliveries if you’re away.
🎁 Install doorbell cameras to monitor your porch in real time.
🎁 Ship to your workplace or to a friend who will be home.
🎁 Use post office holds or pickup lockers when possible.
🎁 Report suspicious activity immediately to 301-932-2222.

Officials also encourage residents to keep an eye on neighbors’ homes and report anyone seen removing packages or loitering near porches.

The sheriff’s office says small steps — such as securing deliveries out of sight or arranging alternate drop-off points — can significantly reduce theft risk during the busy shopping season.
