Washington, D.C. – Triple-digit heat index values are expected across the D.C. metro and surrounding counties Tuesday afternoon, with dangerous heat and humidity prompting a Heat Advisory from 1 to 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values could reach up to 106°F in the District of Columbia, much of northern Virginia, and central and southern Maryland — including Fairfax, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Charles, Calvert, and Spotsylvania Counties.

The oppressive conditions will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for outdoor workers, young children, and older adults. Urban centers like Baltimore and Alexandria may experience the highest discomfort due to limited shade and retained heat from pavement and buildings. Commuters and eventgoers should plan for extra hydration and seek air-conditioned environments during peak afternoon hours.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors if possible, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Employers should provide frequent shaded breaks for outdoor workers. Symptoms of heat stroke—such as confusion, rapid pulse, or unconsciousness—require immediate medical attention.

This marks the region’s most intense heat event of the summer so far, with humidity amplifying already elevated July temperatures.

⚠️ Heat advisories remain in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday, and further warnings could be issued later this week if the pattern continues.
