Baltimore, Maryland – Relief is finally in sight for Maryland after back-to-back days of dangerous heat, with strong thunderstorms and a 10-degree cooldown expected Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 9 p.m. Tuesday, with Baltimore and central Maryland seeing heat index values near 110°F. But the bigger shift arrives late Wednesday night into Thursday, when a cold front sparks scattered thunderstorms and begins a gradual drop in temperatures.
Thursday brings widespread storms across Baltimore, Howard County, and along the I-95 corridor, with a high near 97°F. Temperatures drop to the lower 90s by Friday, breaking a multi-day stretch of triple-digit heat. Showers could arrive as early as 2 a.m. Thursday, continuing through the evening with localized flooding possible in poor drainage areas.
Drivers should plan for delays along I-695, Route 40, and I-83, especially during Thursday’s evening commute. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and prepare for temporary outages due to lightning or gusty winds.
