Baltimore, MD – A powerful heat wave is set to grip the Baltimore region, threatening Juneteenth celebrations with scorching temperatures and a high likelihood of thunderstorms. The heat will intensify through the weekend, pushing temperatures toward triple digits by early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, an active weather pattern is already making its presence felt. Early Wednesday, a Marine Weather Statement was issued for the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding rivers, including the Patapsco River and Baltimore Harbor, warning boaters of strong thunderstorms capable of producing 30-knot wind gusts. This sets the stage for more unsettled weather as temperatures climb. Residents should prepare for a significant stretch of summer heat and humidity.

The most immediate concern arrives on Juneteenth. Thursday will start sunny, but conditions will change as the high temperature soars to 97°F. After 2 p.m., there is an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could bring gusty winds and brief, heavy downpours. Anyone with outdoor holiday plans should have a way to move indoors quickly and stay hydrated.

The heat will briefly relent on Friday, with sunny skies and a high near 90°F. However, the relief is short-lived. The weekend promises abundant sunshine but escalating heat. The high is expected to reach 94°F on Saturday and a sweltering 98°F on Sunday. The heat wave peaks on Monday, with a projected high of 101°F under sunny skies. Residents are advised to check on neighbors, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and know the signs of heat-related illness.

This pattern of extreme heat is expected to continue into next week.

Five-Day Baltimore Forecast:
