Baltimore, MD – The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Garrett County, Maryland, and Western Grant County, West Virginia, from late Thursday night through Friday afternoon due to excessive rainfall and melting snowpack.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), heavy rain combined with lingering snow could cause flooding in low-lying areas, creeks, and streams. Rainfall estimates range from 1 to 2 inches, while snowmelt could contribute an additional 2 to 5 inches of liquid runoff.
Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare for rising water levels, particularly in rivers and creeks. Low-water crossings and roads may become impassable. Officials urge residents to monitor local forecasts and be ready to take action if flooding develops.
Safety Tips:
• Avoid driving through flooded roads. Just six inches of water can sweep a vehicle away.
• Move valuables to higher ground in flood-prone homes.
• Stay informed. Check weather.gov/safety/flood for updates.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday afternoon. Residents should remain alert for possible Flood Warnings as conditions develop.
