Baltimore, Maryland – Drivers and residents across Baltimore and surrounding suburbs are urged to seek higher ground Monday evening as torrential thunderstorms unleash rapid flooding throughout central Maryland. Intense downpours are overwhelming streets, highways, and low-lying neighborhoods, with some roads already submerged by early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Sterling, a Flash Flood Warning is now in effect until 9:15 p.m. for northeastern Anne Arundel County, east central Howard County, southeastern Baltimore County, and Baltimore City. Doppler radar at 6:13 p.m. showed storm cells dumping rain at rates up to 4.5 inches per hour, with flash flooding underway or expected imminently. Additional rainfall of up to 2 inches is possible, rapidly compounding flood risks.

The warning covers major communities and infrastructure including Glen Burnie, Dundalk, Towson, Catonsville, and the Baltimore-Washington Airport corridor. Urban streams, underpasses, and roads like I-95 and I-695 are especially vulnerable. Residents in impacted areas should avoid non-essential travel, monitor weather alerts, and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Power outages and transit delays are likely.

Tonight’s flooding follows a pattern of intense July thunderstorms, echoing similar flash events in recent summers. Warnings remain active, and additional advisories may be issued if storms persist.

Stay tuned for updates; flood warnings remain in effect until at least 9:15 p.m.
