La Plata, MD – A 37-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman and child before barricading himself inside a La Plata home, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the incident occurred Sunday, September 10, around 8:30 p.m. in the 6300 block of Nelson Drive. Deputies reported that Christopher Dale Buchanan, of La Plata, allegedly choked and assaulted the victims before holding a knife to the woman’s throat and threatening to kill her. Both the woman and child were able to escape and seek help.

According to the sheriff’s office, when officers arrived, Buchanan barricaded himself inside the home and was seen in the doorway armed with a knife. Despite repeated attempts from law enforcement to get him to surrender, he refused.

An arrest warrant was obtained, and members of the Domestic Violence Unit entered the home. Buchanan was taken into custody after initially refusing to surrender. Officials said he has been charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.

On Tuesday, September 12, a judge ordered Buchanan to be held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. Authorities noted that additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
